An inclusive and sustainable Swedish labour law – the way ahead

Seminar friday 26 November, 10 –12 and 13.30 –15.30.

Time:
Friday 26 November, 10 –12 and 13.30 –15.30.

Venue:
Albano house 3, room 4205, Stockholm University or Zoom.

The seminar marks the finalisation of the research project An inclusive and sustainable Swedish labour law – the ways ahead, funded by the Swedish research council. The main focus of the project has been to investigate whether Swedish labour law is able to provide also the most vulnerable workers on the labour market with the necessary protection. It cannot claim to be inclusive and sustainable if that is not achieved. The analysis is based on recent legal developments as well as the transformation of the labour market as such.

The seminar is divided into two parts. The morning session will be held in Swedish and the theme is the role of criminalisation in safeguarding decent working conditions on the Swedish labour market. The afternoon session will be in English and the starting point will be Agenda 2030 and the sustainable development goals. We are using the sustainability discourse as an analytical lens when discussing the sustainability of Swedish labour law.

Del I

Part II
13.30 –15.30 The sustainability of the Swedish model of labour market regulation (in English)

The project has examined the dynamics of individual employment law and collective labour law in Sweden. Further specific analysis has focussed on issues of wage regulation, health and safety issues, including work-related stress, and migrant labour. Inclusivity and the need to protect the most vulnerable participants in the labour market has been a key focus of our attention. This second part of the seminar focuses on the further question, namely what do we mean by a ‘sustainable Swedish labour law’, or, in other words, what could an explicit ‘sustainability’ framework add?

Introduction:
Professor Tonia Novitz (University of Bristol), Peter Andersson, Professor Niklas Bruun (Hanken and Stockholm university), Professor Petra Herzfeld Olsson (Stockholm university) and Erik Sjödin.

Comments:
Jonas Malmberg, Chair of the Swedish Labour Court.
